If Steve Rogers was Esteban Rogelios, he would have kicked Iron Man's ass. And then they would have went out and got shitty on Bacardi and Coke and bonded....

I believe the correct response is

As an addendum to this topic, I'd like to volunteer the following as an alternative costume for Cap':

Not that there is anything wrong with puerto rico or anything, but its captain AMERICA. I know that it wasn't the intent of the outfit, but the pattern is exact. It loses something knowing that...

sorry to point that out chief. if it makes you feel any better, there seems to be an extra white stripe on the ends so it isn't exact.

Not your fault Verbs... we just now have to get puerto rico to change their flag. Only fair way to do it really. Captain America > Puerto Rico.
No biggie really, as I've never been a big fan of Captain America, I just thought the costume was fucking sweet when I first saw it.
Does the similarity take away from the look of it for you too? I'm curious to see if Im the only one here...

Would you feel the same way if it was similar to, say, the Texas flag?

Yes I would, but admitedly not as strong.
I think i see where you are going with this, as the original outfit is similar to the texas flag in the same way the puerto rican flag is similar to the new one.

Well, I was really just curious if the issue was with the fact that his outfit resembled a US non-national (state or territory) flag more than the USA's national flag, or if the problem was just that it resembled the Puerto Rican flag specifically.
If it's the former, okay, that makes some sense. If it's the latter, though, I'm sort of confused, because Puerto Rico is part of the US, even though it's not a state, so I have trouble seeing what the problem is.

I'd say a mix of both truly. While Puerto Rico is a part of the country it is a commonwealth and runs on its own government in many areas. But more over the problem would be the lack of association with America by the general public.
That's why I would still be upset with the texas flag, but not as strongly. There is still the similarity to the flag that is non-nation oriented, but at least Texas is generally associated with the USA by the gneral public.
But none of this really matters I suppose for anyone but me, as most will not catch this in the outfit. Again, I didn't catch it till pointed out.

Given that he's called "Captain America", even if people do realise it's similar to the Puerto Rican flag, I don't think there's going to be kids growing up thinking he stands for different values, or that there's some sort of contradiction. If he had the flag of the Third Reich slapped over his chest then, yeah, there's a bit of dissonance, but Puerto Rico isn't exactly enemy territory.
