So speakers are optional extras now?
Holy fuck, I just bought a brand new PC and apparently the ability to make noise is no longer a default requirement of computers! Yay! So it's back out to spend more fucking money on speakers. It has a DVD writer, software for sound mixing, media player and all the rest but no device that enables it to make any noise of any description.
Am I retarded, or is the computer? Should I have asked for speakers? Don't they build that shit into monitors (which, btw, we have two of...whole other story...)?

Usually you should get some kind of shitty built-in thing, yeah.
If you don't care about sound quality, you can probably pick some up for cheap from a second-hand store, or even at whatever big discount atrocity store you have in the UK. I bought some new speakers for 10 bucks at Target over here.

Yeah, we went and got some. I may have scared the serving bloke by threatening to go back and find him if they didn't work. Shame I couldn't go back to the 12 year olds that served us originally.

Where'd you buy it, for how much, and what are the specs?

At a shop, for an affordable amount, and it's good enough for our purposes.

Just wanted to make sure you didn't get ripped off or anything. You probably could have gotten speakers with a computer for just as cheap somewhere.

Yes, I could have, but instead I purchased them separately. And I discussed my choice of computer with Magnus before I bought it anyway. He knows his shit.

Re: So speakers are optional extras now?
I wouldn't really worry about it. I would wager that people commonly upgrade their computers more often than buying new for the first time. In that case, similarly, there would be a good chance of the owner already have speakers. Either that, or to keep cost down you'd get the shittiest pieces of tin your sound card could send signal to and you'd be mad you spent 10 extra pounds on something you wouldn't use anyway.
Frankly I used to think it was a bigger crime to not include a USB cable with a printer. Well I still do, but in my case I have more USB cables than peripherals so it would be a waste.
