In Memoriam: Hercules
Saturday March 6th 2004 Ray Hernandez passed away from a heart attack
Better known as "the Mighty Hercules" and "Hercules" Hernandez he was one of those guys I vividly remember when I first started watching wrestling back in 1989. Now some could go into a whole rant on why a 44, almost 45 year old guy dies of a heart attack and all that, but this is a POSITIVE column, it's a memorial column to a man that seems to just get a passing note of "was in the WWF and some other stuff" on most wrestling websites
But I want to do it a little differently. Today's "Moment in time" is dedicated to Hercules, and a thanks to Vince McMahon for never giving us the "Olympians" with Hercules and Zeus.
I honestly didn't know much about Hercules from before he entered the WWF in 1985, scratch that I knew NOTHING about him. Just like in the WWF he wasn't a man that was larger than life, or had great wrestling skills to make the world notice him. What you saw was what you got with him, he was a big powerful man who could give you a good brawl when he wanted to.
Hercules Hernandez made his debut in either 80 or 81 as far as I can tell and started out in Florida and Texas, his first real brush with the spotlight came when he entered the Central States area in 1982, trying to make a name for himself by working his way up the ranks. During his time there he won the Central States title from Mark Romero (Mark Youngblood) but lost it back to him later on. He also hooked up with Dewey Robinson in a pretty well matched team.
For a while Hercules was also in the Mid-Atlantic area wrestling, but you'd be excused for not knowing this (neither did I) as he was masked, he was one of the Assassins, along with Jody Hamilton (who was one of the original Assassins along with Tom Renesto). Hercules was unmasked as Assassin III by Jimmy Valliant at the end of 83 and the team split up after that.
