But Jaber said he kept one secret from his captors, fearing the treatment could get worse. "I mean I like rap, just imagine them playing jazz."

It's a case-by-case scenario. Sometimes the players click and sometimes it just seems like they're forcing themselves and think they're contributing something positive to the world when in reality everyone is poking out their eardrums.
The Traveling Wilburys, for example, were wonderful. It's hard to believe that so many big names and so many talented artists could fit in a room together, but they were able to do it.
Audioslave seems to fit in the "misunderstood" category as some people want them to sound like Rage or Soundgarden and...well, how do I put this...THEY AREN'T EITHER!!
The Allman Brothers are a supergroup in a sense with the addition of Warren Haynes, which has produced nothing but good, IMO.
I can't think of wholly negative examples right now, but I know they're out there...

Allmans can't count as a supergroup; there's where Haynes got his start (and having a Haynes-Trucks guitar lineup in any other band would be a supergroup if not that Trucks first was with the Allmans too). At least, I wouldn't count them as a super group...
That being said I think most supergroups are misunderstood. Everyone has their expectations, and...well, this was brought on because of Velvet Revolver. I expected them to sound like a total GnR rip off, and they weren't. No, they're much worse than any GnR rip off (I SLAY me!).
That being said, Audioslave is probably a good example- moving in a totally new direction that the artists feel is natural and fans aren't expecting.
Eyes Adrift would be another good example- Kirk Kurtwood from the Meat Puppets, Bud Gaugh from Sublime, and Krist Novoselich from Nirvana. Doing...country.
