North America was divided into 4 quadrants, each with multiple heroes protecting it.
The Northeast is led by Captain America, the Southeast is led by John Stewart, the Northwest is led by Superman, and the Southwest is led by Iron Man.
A mutual support system is always in effect. Should anyone be overwhelmed, the other three quadrants will lend support. Floating above the Earth is a massive watchtower, the former home of the Justice League. Managing to escape relatively unharmed, it continues its vigil. It is a first defense against cosmic enemies that might seek to take advantage over the vulnerable planet.
Several heroes make their home here, which is maintained by the Martian Manhunter and the Atom.
The Watchtower is further supported by their allies. The Shi'Ar Imperial Guard, the Green Lantern Corps, and the Nova Corps still exist.  Following the dimensional collapse and subsequent invasion of various evil races, the powerful mutant Magneto deemed it necessary to once again save as many mutants as he could. No longer interested in placing mutants above humanity, he found it much more essential to save whatever beings were willing to join with him.
With the help of Dr. Doom, whose home country of Latveria was destroyed by a massive asteroid from the remains of Apokolips, Magneto created a New Asteroid M.
Doom and Magneto offered asylum to any and all mutants and superbeings that wished to be free of the violence on the surface. The only requirement to stay on the asteroid is that they would protect it should it ever come under attack.
Still well within reach of the Earth's magnetic fields, Magneto was able to develop his powers even further, able to tap into the fields of the moon and nearly tripling his power levels. Master Mold allowed this to take place in exchange for New Asteroid M's help should the moon ever be attacked.
The alliance between New Asteroid M and the moon is a very powerful alliance. Both have sworn an oath of non-interference with the Earth, unless they are attacked first.New Asteroid M:
